The electronic music community is remembering ALESSA, the Japanese DJ and producer whose classical piano background helped shape a distinctive sound and career that reached far beyond the club.

The Japanese electronic music scene is mourning the loss of ALESSA, the classically trained pianist, DJ and producer who passed away on September 5, 2026, at the age of 33. Her team confirmed the news in a statement shared on her official Instagram account, revealing that her passing was sudden and that a private funeral had taken place on September 9.

The statement thanked fans and collaborators for their support, while asking for privacy as her family and team come to terms with the loss. No further details surrounding her passing have been disclosed.

ALESSA carved out a distinctive place in electronic music by bringing together two worlds: her classical musical training and the high-energy sounds of the dancefloor. An award-winning pianist with perfect pitch, she carried that musical foundation into her work as a DJ and producer, developing a sound that reflected both technical ability and a passion for electronic music.

Her career included releases on internationally recognised labels such as Revealed Recordings, BASSCON Records and Sosumi Records. One of her notable releases was 2020’s ‘Into The Unknown’ with Vadai, which marked Sosumi Records’ return. Her music also received support from artists including Hardwell, KSHMR, W&W and Sander van Doorn.

One of the defining moments of her career came when she performed with the Japan Century Symphony Orchestra, in what was described as Japan’s first DJ-and-orchestra concert. The performance brought her classical roots full circle, reimagining electronic music in a setting that connected orchestral musicianship with the energy of a live DJ performance.

Following the news, British DJ and Sosumi Records founder Kryder shared an emotional tribute to ALESSA, remembering her not only as an exceptionally talented artist but also as a close friend he had known for more than a decade.

Kryder recalled their adventures together across Thailand, Amsterdam, China and Japan, describing her as energetic, outgoing and someone who brought life to every room she entered. He also reflected on signing her to Sosumi Records and the significance of their musical connection.

Remembering her orchestra performance, he highlighted the moment she performed his track ‘STAY’ alongside the Japan Century Symphony Orchestra, describing it as an experience he would never forget.

ALESSA’s passing is a profound loss for the people who knew her and for the wider electronic music community. Her journey from classical piano to international dancefloors showed the different ways musical backgrounds can come together to create something unique.

While her time was cut short, the music, performances and memories she leaves behind will continue to be part of her story.

Our thoughts are with ALESSA’s family, friends, collaborators and fans during this difficult time.
